Is my decking upside-down? Reeded Decking.
Decks are reeded on one side to prevent moisture build up in key contact areas with the deck’s supports. Having the reeds facing down allows moisture to disburses from these areas, helping to prevent mould growth and rot. While some prefer this look (it’s very popular in New Zealand), it can actually open you up to some issues when it comes to coating and cleaning. The best bet for decking like this is an oil based coating, such as Nature’s Timber Oil, which will penetrate into the timber and leave minimal film build. While customers might say the deck was built like this for ‘grip’ reasons, they actually become very slippery when wet and approached lengthways.
